Mia Maro was a 17-year-old girl who lived with her father, Mohammed Almaru, in Tinley Park, Chicago. Mia’s mother, Audrey Jorgenson, sustained a traumatic brain injury in 2019 and has required constant care since then.
On 26 April 2022, Mia drove her father’s car to care for her mother. On the way there, she got into a minor car accident, hitting the back of another car. That day, Mia texted her aunt that she was worried her father would “beat her ass”, and was “going to kill” her.
Then, on Sunday, 1st May 2022, Mia was found dead.
Rhanda, Mia’s aunt, had gone to the home Mohammed Almaru shared with his daughter to check on her after not hearing from her for a while. When she arrived, Almaru asked her to help his wife with some paperwork, which she agreed to. Later that day, when she went into the other room, she discovered Mia’s body and Almaru lying next to her with self-inflicted wounds on his wrists. He had also taken pills in an attempt to take his own life.
Mia’s death was ruled a homicide after it was discovered that she had sustained multiple injuries, including repeated strikes to her head causing “extensive haemorrhaging and bleeding” in her brain. Police found a metal pole in the kitchen and a rubber mallet in the garage of the home, both with blood on.
Mia’s father Almaru sent a letter to one of his sons stating;
“I lost my mind, went out of control, and beat the shit out of her, and accidentally hit her in the head.”
“I laid down with her, was unconscious, and woke up to her cold body.”
The Friday before her death, Mia was due to go to her senior prom, but Almaru didn’t want her to go because he did not trust her. It is unknown if she made it there or not.
Almaru has since been stabilised and charged with first-degree murder.
Update:
On 7th October, 2024, Mohammed Almaru, 44, was found guilty of the first-degree murder of his 15-year-old daughter, Mia Maro.
Mia Maro was found dead in the family home on May 1st, 2022. Her father had beaten her to death with a metal pole and a rubber mallet. He had superficial self-inflicted wounds to his wrists and throat, and had also ingested pills.
Mia’s mother was in the home at the time but unable to intervene due to being bedridden following a traumatic brain injury years prior.
Almaru was sentance to 55 years in prison and must serve the whole term (minus the two years credit Almaru had already spent in custody). He will be 97 years old before he is eligible for release.
