The Disappearance of Patricia Spencer & Pamela Hobley

On October 31st, 1969, Patricia Spencer, 16, and Pamela Hobley, 15, left high school together and have been missing ever since.

Both Pamela and Patricia lived with their families in Oscoda, Michigan, USA. Pamela had recently got engaged to her long-term boyfriend Jim.

On the day they went missing (halloween, 1969) a prank bomb threat had been called into the school the girls both attended. The two of them signed out of school at around 2pm and were seen leaving together. This was slightly unusual as the girls weren’t considered to be friends so didn’t spend a lot of time with each other.

There was a homecoming game that evening at the school, something both Pamela and Patricia had wanted to attend, as well as a halloween party that night.

Pamela’s fiance Jim got worried when she didn’t show up for the party, so he called her parents. Pamela’s mother Lois then began calling other student’s parents, including Patricia’s , to find out if anyone had seen her daughter. This is when she learnt that Patricia had also not shown up for the party.

Both girls were reported missing but the police believed them to be runaways so not much was done during the first week of them going missing.

Both Pamela and Patricia had left their purses and ID’s at their homes and neither had taken any clothes or anything else with them.

Investigators theorised that they had travelled to Flint, Michigan, though why they thought this is unclear.

A witness did come forward to report that they had picked them up on River Road and had driven them to the downtown area that day.

A gas station attendant stated he’d picked them up and took them to downtown Oscoda. It’s not known where they went after this.

Police searched the area but they did not find anything.

An airman from the area had previously been charged after one of the girls was found drugged in a woodland area previously, but whether this is related is unclear.

Patricia’s former boyfriend also disappeared a month after the girls, but police say this is an unrelated incident.

Patricia Spencer’s mother said:

“I have done everything I can think of to find my daughter. So now I am just plain begging. Some of you have to know how the girls left here… We have felt since the second week the girls were gone we would never see them again, but we have to keep looking.”

Pamela Hobley’s sister said:

“I can’t move on. I just hope that someone knows something and will finally have the guts to say something.”

In 1985 a tip came in that alleged Pamela Hobley and Patricia Spencer had been killed and buried under a barn which was a popular hang out spot for teenagers. They searched the area but didn’t find anything.

The disappearance of Pamela Hobley and Patricia Spencer is still being actively investigated and in 2010 a new detective had been assigned to the case. The police believe that the girls have been murdered.

In 2013, a statement was released which indicated that the police have identified a person of interest in the case but need more evidence in order to move forward.

Unfortunately both Pamela and Particia’s mothers have passed away without ever finding out what happened to their daughters.
